As a fan of the franchise since day 1, I have times where I completely overdose on the games until I am sick of them. Having played the RBY era to pieces, then the JP imports of GS I found UK Silver to be a struggle to remain interested in and stopped. A few years of writing it off as a kids franchise later and I spotted Ruby and Sapphire- I bought Ruby and found it a massive disappointment. I ignored the franchise again until Diamond came out.
As X and Y are so good I decided to revisit the old games and see if they still hold up- I chose Emerald as the most complete game from the 3rd Gen and found that it was actually not as awful as I had thought. The map is not as horrendous as I believed- I remember it being 60 percent in a cave or in water but it is not as bad as all that. The main downside is the painfully slow speed of everything- there is a lot of backtracking and the battle animations seem to take an age. Even with the running shoes travelling is a chore.
The plus points are pretty much the usual Pokemon plus points- deceptively complicated maths disguised as a childrens game. Not the best Generation at all but worth a play through.

Not the best installation in the Pokemon series, but a lot of fun to randomize!
